Do you have an eating disorder? Or do you suspect that someone close to you has issues with food and eating healthily? By this we mean mostly anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and obesity.
Signs include a refusal to admit the seriousness of the weight loss, or extreme influence of body shape or weight on self image, or a false experience of one's shape or weight (body dysmorphia).
Some people eat too much and then vomit to maintain low body weight, others purge themselves. Weight-loss strategies include avoiding fattening foods, self-induced vomiting, self-induced purging, extreme exercise, use of appetite suppressants, and diuretics.
Trying to force change simply does not work. Often, the first steps are to encourage an acceptance that all is not well, get things checked out by a trusted GP or Private Consultant, and then begin work on body image, self-esteem, sense of control and purpose in life. Particularly important is self-talk and many clients have seen a dramatic shift in well-being simply by changing their inner dialogue to more positive words and tonality.
This can lead to malnutrition, low energy, loss of sex drive, cessation of periods, raised cortisol levels, thyroid problems, abnormal insulin secretions and growth of fine, downy hair (lanugo) over the body.
Many eating disorders originate in self-respect within the family dynamic and peer group pressures
Many of our clients had developed patterns of behaviour that denied or hid this completely. Often we were only called on when there were clear and obvious indicators of difficulty or serious health problems
"There is absolutely no need for anyone
to suffer a phobia nowadays......"
Stephen Wichett SNLP, Senior Consultant and Founder of The Phobia Clinic
