Everyone has a little anxiety from time to time. It's essential in keeping us in good personal and social balance, and helps to maintain our self-esteem and sense of 'rightness' in the world.
It can also result in limiting beliefs about future change or recovery, unsuccessful attempts at therapy, and blameless resistance to change - with every helpful intervention 'misunderstood' or 'tried but failed'.
Many of our clients had developed private coping strategies and avoidances to keep themselves safe, often disguised as 'eccentricities' or 'quirks'. And usually with considerable humour. However, inside, they lived in dread of each day's trials, and viewed themselves as 'special' or 'strong-minded' as a means of defining and understanding their situation. And any thought of attempted change was as unpleasant as the fear itself.
All of the above 'fear of fear' is completely unnecessary. Modern phobia cures have moved on from the dark old days of regression, analysis, ECT, psychotropic drugs, flooding , increasing exposure therapy or systematic desensitisation. These were ineffective, cruel and misguided.
The effect of such long-term anxiety and stress is very draining, can lead to an increased risk of health problems, and often causes a complete shift in the individual's self-image, personality and behaviour.
However, some individuals with multiple, unresolved, overwhelming, or long-standing phobias can take this natural anxiety, and develop into the worst of all phobias - the fear of fear itself. These sufferers have such a strong aversion to experiencing the physical, mental and emotional symptoms of their fear or particular triggers that they have a new and generalised phobia - which can be completely terrifying and disabling.
Change today comes from a gentle and helpful approach, patience, and understanding the problem really well. The first step we take is to ensure your safety and comfort in our work together. Next, we spend all the time needed to help you recognise the worst mistake that a phobic can make - and how to avoid this at all future times. This is very simple, powerful and permanently effective. Only then will we begin to help you change....
"There is absolutely no need for anyone
to suffer a phobia nowadays......"
Stephen Wichett SNLP, Senior Consultant and Founder of The Phobia Clinic
