Some people have had an unexpectedly fast rise to success or fame. And some fear that their descent may be equally precipitous. They are all too aware of the vicissitudes of fate. And many have no viable alternative or fallback strategy should they fall out of favour.
Similarly, public figures and business executives may feel obliged to 'keep face', to encourage their followers, and display a strong leadership. Even during difficult times, cutbacks, planned downsizing or threatened redundancies. All this can bring considerable pressure from the resulting projected expectations of other people, and their need for re-assurance.
As comedy legend John Cleese said to Michael Parkinson (in an interview about his profound influence in the development of humour in Britain):
For this reason, we are often called on to coach individuals in keeping balanced and centred in times of growing success, whilst developing the right balance of personal and professional support, and future strategies.
"Like most successful people, I live in constant fear of being 'found out'......"
Furthermore, in times of great change or difficulty (as in recent years) an individual can develop 'a morbid dread of their career ending' that goes well beyond simple uncertainty and anxiety. The resulting behavioural changes range from change of style or approach, publicity-seeking, reclusiveness, addictions and dependencies, through to relationship problems, controlling and blaming behaviour, sycophant recruitment, and paranoia.
At this level of difficulty, expert therapeutic assistance is called for, and we are pleased to be of help to those in need of assistance and direction, while removing any unnecessary fears or worries. Often a single session or two can result in great changes in perspective and a more stable and certain feeling about one's own abilities.
"There is absolutely no need for anyone
to suffer a phobia nowadays......"
Stephen Wichett SNLP, Senior Consultant and Founder of The Phobia Clinic
